Road to Kona

Ben Shepherd, Ironman Kona 2016 Qualifier talks life, and sometimes just getting through the day...

I previously wrote an article on being a badass. I stand by that, too.

Being a badass is part of every day life for everyone.  Since then, my life has changed considerably.  Injuries, travel, increasing workload and the birth of my baby daughter have definitely altered my perspective.  Apart from being tired, I have learnt something pretty massive: Everyone has their struggles.  It's how you deal with them that makes the difference.  I have held my head high through some of them, others have brought me to tears - a massive statement coming from me.  I'm only just getting over my injury, and my girl is allowing me a massive four hours of sleep a night.  It has been the hardest thing I have ever done, especially from a mental standpoint.

Training for Kona has been adding to the exhaustion, but my sheer grit is not allowing me to get down about it.  And I can still smile, because it is all worthwhile - I just know it.  Visualising seeing my wife and daughter when I cross that finish line will be simply amazing - I simply can't wait.

So what's the point of writing this? I promise, there is a reason.

My experiences have made me realise that despite the struggles that everyone faces, there is one thing that is greater: willpower.  We all have our weak moments, but eventually they will pass.  There is one secret to all of this though...  Friends and family, but most of all, yourself.  Self belief is such a massive component of success, or even just the litte wins like facing another day with a smile.  So this is what I want you to do, right now.  Walk up to the nearest mirror, look yourself square in the eye, and say this to yourself: "You are awesome."

And you know what?  You are. Honestly, you are.  The battles that each and every one of us face on a daily basis, and win more often than not, make us incredible.  I've dealt with a lot of awesome people recently who have let a little bit of self doubt creep in to their minds, but perhaps they are just too close to see just how incredible they truly are.

Please, do me a favour.  When life gets tough, when the next training session seems impossible, when everything gets you down, just remember this.  You are stronger than you think you are. You're incredible, never forget it.

And when life seems like it is going swimmingly, don't forget your friends and family - because they just might need a boost like we all do from time to time.

Keep being awesome, see you out there!
